Oh, for pete's sake. They're pictures of boobies. They have no intrinsic power other than what we give them.

I think the reactions to the SI issue, and things like it, are reflections of how we view the world as individuals. One person can see it and be unaffected. Another can see all the wrongs of the world emanating from it. Some people eating disorders spreading from them like the plague. (Of course, during the renisance, the tended to like large women in their art. Perhaps people were then decrying art as causing obesity rather than anerexia?)

As so many here pointed out, pictures of anything, including women, have no power of their own. Their only greater meaning, for good or bad, is what we decide to give them, as is much more a reflection of personal psyche and culture than that of the subject itself.

To the sexually repressed prudes on both the right, and the left - There is nothing wrong lusting after a beautiful body. Let us not mistake a healthy libido with perversion. Research has indicated that sexual repression most often results in the development of deviant acts.

I definitely think the swimsuit issue objectifies women. What bothers me the most is the format of this objectification. Sports Illustrated is a respected magazine that for 51 weeks out of the year reports on the lives and achievements of athletes, men and women. Then once a year it comes out with an issue where women are plastered half-naked and in provocative poses on almost every page. What if the situation were reversed and the swimsuit issue were not women, but men? The men were all posed with a come hither look in their eyes and were covered with nothing more than a strategically placed piece of cloth. I'm bothered not by the women's beautiful bodies but because it disrespectfully negates the accomplishments of the women athletes who grace its pages the other 51 weeks of the year."

yep. because exposing your crotch like that and hunching
your shoulders to expose just a few more inches of cleavage
is a TOTALLY natural way to sit.
