| "This image presents Richard Billingham’s parents, Ray and Liz, kissing: the tattooed mother and the frail father, briefly closing out the world around them. Billingham’s camera, though, faithfully records all of the incongruous and telling details of the scene, including the ceramic Pierrot heads arranged spookily on the wall, the bottle of cider on the side table, and the garden furniture that Ray is sitting on. But the complexity of the image is held together by the one central act of unashamed sincerity. Billingham’s celebrated photographs of his family and their home in Birmingham, England, invite the viewer into an emphatically working-class world. Bathing their subjects in the intense light of flash photography, his images bear intimate, clear-eyed witness to the full spectrum of family life. As frank as only family photographs can be, their honesty is as compelling as it is touching." |
