Aiming to win back tween girls who would rather watch music videos and chat on the Internet than play with dolls, Mattel Inc. is giving 43-year-old Barbie an image makeover that would make Christina Aguilera proud. Forget prom dresses and flight attendant outfits. Bring on the crop tops, low-riding jeans and bare midriffs. My Scene Barbie and her fashionable companions, Chelsea and Madison, are set to arrive at stores just a few weeks before Christmas. Selling for about $25, the toys are an attempt to revive Barbie's popularity with precocious preteen girls who wouldn't be caught dead playing with dolls. 'They [Mattel] have recognized that a lot of girls are losing interest in Barbie,' said Debbie Gordon, a former advertising executive who runs media literacy workshops in Toronto-area schools. Children 'are spending more time in front of their TV and computer screens.' The images they soak up are often of scantily clad women for whom female empowerment is all about sex appeal.
