"Jan Saudek's
imagery draws upon nineteenth-century photography: his use of hand tinting
gives his photographs the intensity and look of hand-tinted daguerreotypes.
His work dwells on sexual desire and parody, exhibitionism, fetishism
and vulgarity. Saudek, as did Whitman, glorifies all our bodily functions.
Despite the fact that some of his photographs suggest rape, incest,
or pedophilia, his images, unlike those of other photographers
Robert Mapplethorpe, for example do not "document"
or record but rather embody the artist's dream time realities. But Saudek
molds his imagery from a host of deep-rooted, imaginary sources, such
as storytelling, childhood memories, folklore, musical impressions and
adolescent sexual fantasies. Saudek's images reflect not so much an
indexed reality but a magical one, whereby desire and instinct are projected
uncensored."

So much conflict. (The
steely glare and the provocative
pose, for example.) The sex industry. The sex industry...." - Mark-o what next? oompa loompa sex? - under the rainbow I can't help feeling that depictions of horrible acts, (such as rape, incest, and pedophilia), must have the same effect upon us as excessive violence. That is a general de-sensitization. I believe that these crimes should not be covered up, but they shouldn't be glorified as an art form either. - So There |
