"Lowrider style combines with clothing, music, and body kinesics to produce a performance of "minority" identity. In a de-facto segregated city, this becomes a mobile sign of the barrio. This expressive style is thus constantly engaged with the politics of everyday life, turning traffic into a dialogue on identity, place, mobility, and rights of access to public space. Car shows often provide the context for lowrider performance. Sometimes lowrider style is deployed in attempts to directly affect public policy as well, thereby collapsing the display event with the political demonstration. Recently, lowriders have taken part in political marches for human rights and against neo-segregation in Austin, Texas."
