"Once poised, they were lit from a single source, their bodies frozen by a strobe into white stone.  The resulting compositions are Carabasi's tribute to centuries-old figure studies in which 'the nude' was not limited to a solitary form.  'I wanted to combine the realism of photography with the content of classical painting and drawing,' he says, 'placing emphasis on the mythical and the metaphorical rather than on the formal.'  The communal nudes of the Renaissance, the crowded arrangements and chiaroscuro of Mannerism, and the order and idealization of seventeenth-century French classical painting all meld together in the limbs of Carabasi's subjects, creating a complex puzzle that the eye happily struggles to solve."
