"Growing up in Florence, Italy, Dianora Niccolini's first crush was on a local boy, Michelangelo's David. Classical art has inspired her photography since she began shooting male nudes in the early '70s ('Before Mapplethorpe!' she insists). In true Renaissance style, Niccolini avoids human imperfections and views the body from an artistic, rather than an erotic perspective. 'I'm always searching for that universal beauty that 1 percent of humans have,' says Niccolini. 'I love to watch the Olympics for this reason.' Niccolini once worked as a medical photographer, documenting bodies ravaged by disease and trauma, but the work saddened her. 'Aging and disease happens, and I accept this,' she says. 'I am aging. I don't have a perfect body, but I can appreciate the magnificence of those who do.'"
