| "Bigger and more powerful are qualities we've come to expect every year in the newest product offerings and sure enough, firearms makers delivered once again in 2003. Exhibit A: Smith & Wesson's Model 500, a .50-caliber piece just slightly less powerful than your average howitzer, which sets new standards as the most powerful revolver in the world. The muzzle energy of 2600 ft.-lb. is more than five times that of a .357 Magnum (500 ft.-lb.) and nearly three times as great as a .44 Magnum (900 ft.-lb.). Stopping power, indeed. As desirable as this überrevolver might be, don't expect to see a lot of them around. In standard form with an 8-3/8-in. barrel, the Model 500 weighs in at 72.5 ounces. Said one bystander, 'It makes a Dirty Harry special look like a pop gun.'" |
