"In his works Christian Lemmerz uses a combination,
or a confrontation, of classically-based rigour and an expressive aesthetics
of effect. Each issue presented has its own precise artistic solution
and each idea has its own optimum material - from the plaster cast with
its classical sculptural references to ready-mades. Various synthetic
materials are also used, as well as such organic elements as fat, blood
and urine. It could be said, then, that Lemmerz operates with an open
work of art at a philosophical level, where silence is not the opposite
of speech. By shifting the boundaries of what is sculpturally possible
he also formulates his questions concerning the taboo areas of existence.
This has often led to a feeling of provoked aggression on the part of
the onlooker. An unpleasant mirror is held up before our faces when
we are confronted with a complex of problems we would much rather do
without."
