"The fact that Disney shows
Ariel's desire to enter the patriarchal society describes women's access
to the 'white male system' (Sells 177). This phrase characterizing patriarchy
explains the superiority of white males, who cannot be questioned for
their dominance because to them nothing exists out of their world. They
know and understand everything. Everything they believe is correct.
Therefore, the pomposity of the producers as well as the characters
are expressed when they dismiss the sea world as being imaginary. It
is also apparent through 'the "wholesomeness" of Disney's
patriarchal depictions of females' (O'Brien 155). For example, the feminist,
Elizabeth Cady Stanton believes that patriarchy denies "women the
skills and rights to exist as sovereign selves" (Henke, Smith,
Umble 235). How can women succeed in a world that is male dominated?
Patriarchy does not allow women to perform to their fullest potentials
just as a matriarchal society would not allow men to. In addition, a
scene in the movie where the lack of feminism is evident due to Disney's
use of the 'white male system' (Sells 177) (a society where white males
dominate), could have easily been ignored, is at the end of the film
when Eric ultimately kills Ursula; however, Ariel could have easily
killed her. This example is an error in the making of the film that
takes away Ariel's heroic characteristics. Clearly, it was not inevitable
whether Ursula should have been struck by the feisty female or the strong
male, and Disney chose the male. If Ariel would have taken the final
stab, then feminists might respect Disney more; however, they did not,
causing The Little Mermaid the damnation of removing any heroic actions
that Ariel might have pursued. "

Disney
was a dopey, heterosexual pervert, however, his mastery of big screen
animation and his studio's invention of memorable characters earned
him well deserved recognition. Only paranoid, white males with teenie,
weenie penises can mask their disabilities with such other worldly
fantasies.
- dead...sorry he's gone WHAT DIDJA WATCH IT FOR ?? - Freedom of Choice !! While it seems that Ariel did not perform any heroic acts, she definitely showed great strides in standing up against the unquestionable male authority. Disney seems to be desperately trying to hold onto the old concept of "Prince Charming will come to the rescue" =P - World Dominatrix who lit the fuse on her tampon? - inga Jeeeez...whoever wrote that narrative...MELLOW OUT. - TakeAChillPill Some people try and read too much into an animated Siren...I'ts just a cartoon for god's sake. It was made for ENTERTAINMENT. When we let the movies, TV etc...define our values and "teach" our children...we have indeed reached a sad state. Movies with a message are contrived at best...A film is a moment in time defined by the writer, director, actors or animated characters...nothing more. Go out and live / see life for yourself. go to a library, a museum, a park, a beach...even a mall !!! There you can see and learn about REAL LIFE. Stop trying to assign profound qualities and meanings to simple entertainment. You will (or may already) need medication. - Miami Mike Those lucious lips, those big blue eyes, that flowing red hair... Disney knows how to draw em. - Randy The person who wrote the above needs to deal with SERIOUS self-esteem and confidence issues. It's just a lame 'toon. Take it at face value. Let little kids enjoy the hooey...if they are learning their life lessons from the film, you are seriously remiss in your ability to raise your young-uns. Since you have such issues with an animated film and story...maybe they are better off getting their info from Disney videos. - Love=Knowledge Ariel didn't have to kill, all she had to do was stand up. - Get a life, folks Hey...it's just an hour and a half long commercial to get kids to buy crappy toys and beg their parents to take them to expensive theme parks. Sociology it ain't. - Fat Dumb and Happy |
