Tomato
fans from Spain and around the world indulged in a manic free-for-all,
throwing some 100,000 kilograms (220,000 pounds) of the stuff at each
other to celebrate La Tomatina, surely one of the world's messiest festivals.
Drawn by enthusiastic stories of past visitors to the madcap event,
some 30,000 people descended on the small town of Bunol, Spain, just
outside the eastern city of Valencia, to throw the fruit at anything
that moved -- taking care only to squash them up a little first in accordance
with "rules."
Bunol mayor Fernando Giraldos braved the hail of soggy missiles to explain
the point of all the amusement. "The Tomatina is just a fun event,
where you can throw tomatoes in the street for an hour, alongside people
of other nationalities, while you forget all your cares.
