"The
components of a bicycle have been squashed into a square block. Still
recognizable, the various elements such as the saddle, handlebars, and
pedal combine to create a powerful work. These compressions represent
some of César's best known sculptures, which range from crushed
cars to wearable jewellery, figurative assemblages and plastic moulds.
Despite the disposable nature of the components, however, César's
work bears little relation to Pop Art. His use of pulverized vehicles
is more in line with the Nouveau Réaliste aesthetic, which favoured
the use of everyday and discarded materials for poetic ends. César's
use of incongruous objects to make sculptures also owes much to the
rich legacy of Dada and Surrealism." |
